چکیده

Two production experiments were conducted to establish the anchor point for the beginning of the final rise in Dutch falling-rising pitch contours. We systematically varied the prosodic structure of the post-nuclear words by including the stress level (primary or secondary) of the penultimate syllable and the distance of the last stressed syllable to the utterance end as factors. None of the syllable types provided an anchor point for the timing of the beginning of the rise, which appeared to be most constant relative to the utterance end or to the end of the rise. Our finding is not consistent with earlier experiments which found a tendency for the beginning of the rise to be attracted to the last stressed syllable. Additionally, we found that unaccented primary stressed syllables are somewhat longer than un-accented secondary stressed syllables confirming earlier findings for Dutch obtained on the basis of reiterant speech.

On the timing of the final rise in Dutch falling-rising intonation contours

A corpus of Dutch falling–rising intonation contours with early nuclear accent was elicited from nine speakers with a view to establishing the extent to which the low F0 target immediately preceding the final rise, was attracted by a post-nuclear stressed syllable (PNS) in either of the last two words or by Second Occurrence Contrastive Focus (SOCF) on either of these words. We found a small ef...

Revisiting pitch slope and height effects on perceived duration

The shape of pitch contours has been shown to have an effect on the perceived duration of vowels. For instance, vowels with high level pitch and vowels with falling contours sound longer than vowels with low level pitch. Depending on whether the comparison is between level pitches or between level and dynamic contours, these findings have been interpreted in two ways. For inter-level comparison...

A contrastive study of Catalan and Spanish declarative intonation: Focus on Majorcan dialects

The goal of the present paper is to identify some of the differences in the intonation of Catalan and Spanish as spoken in Majorca. The tonal features we investigated were: (1) utterance-final pitch accents in broad focus declaratives, and (2) local contrastive focus pitch accents. Previous research, mostly on related varieties, such as Central Catalan and Castilian Spanish, had indirectly sugg...

Perception of pitch contours by native and non-native tone listeners

Level, rising and falling pitch contours were presented to twenty native speakers of Mandarin Chinese and twenty-one native speakers of English for discrimination in a same-different categorial discrimination task. Overall, Mandarin listeners were significantly more successful than English listeners. However, both groups exhibited a similar pattern of perceptual advantage for rising and falling...

Perception of Pitch Contours among Native Tone Listeners

Level, rising and falling pitch contours were presented to ten native speakers of Thai and fifteen native speakers of Mandarin Chinese for pair-wised discrimination in a same-different categorial discrimination task. Their performance was comparable across all contrasts. Both groups were more successful at discriminating the rising from the falling and the level contours, but failed to discrimi...
